He opened a conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, as a franchise of "Genroku Sushi." At a time when the automobile society had just begun, he opened stores in suburban areas and expanded the number of stores.

In order to achieve further growth, the company became independent from the Genroku Sushi franchise and changed its name to GENKI SUSHI Co., Ltd.

First overseas expansion The company also began to focus on overseas business, and opened the first Japanese conveyor belt sushi restaurant in the United States, Hawaii (U.S. subsidiary Genki Sushi USA, Inc.). In 1994, it opened restaurants in Singapore, and in 1995 in Hong Kong and Malaysia through franchises. Currently, it has expanded into a total of nine countries and regions, including China and Indonesia.

The first "non-conveyor belt sushi" store (UOBEI SHIBUYA-DOUGENZAKA store) was opened, which is an all-order type store without a conveyor belt. "Non-conveyor belt sushi" with fresh, freshly made and juicy products delivered immediately has been highly praised, and in 2015 it won the Restaurant Industry Press Association's "2015 Restaurant Award."
